Welcome to the SHEDS
The Safe Schools/Healthy Students (SS/HS) Evaluation Data System (SHEDS) is an online data collection and management system developed to support SS/HS grantees in contributing to the multi-site evaluation as required by the SS/HS program. The SHEDS is a mechanism for communicating evaluation activities, managing and storing data, and disseminating evaluation findings. The SHEDS provides necessary resources to grantees and is also a resource for other SS/HS program stakeholders.
SS/HS Program Background
Since its implementation in 1999, the SS/HS program has been at the forefront of policy and programs to make schools safe, promote positive youth development, and provide supportive learning environments. Its mission is to support school and community partnerships in their efforts to develop and coordinate integrated systems that create safe, drug-free environments that are conducive to learning and promote the behavioral health of children and youth. SAMHSA seeks to promote wide-scale adoption of the SS/HS framework by building upon the lessons learned from past efforts. The program also seeks to engage state/tribal and community partners in collaborations that will result in the successful implementation of comprehensive school violence prevention initiatives that are guided by the SS/HS framework.
About the Evaluation
The SS/HS Multi-Site Evaluation (MSE) is mandated under the authority of the Secretary of Health and Human Services. Specifically, 42 U.S.C. 290(hh), item (f), requires an evaluation of each project and dissemination of the results. In keeping with this mandate, the goal of the MSE is to assess the extent to which this pilot effort facilitates wide-scale adoption and operation of the SS/HS program in the selected states, builds state and community-level partnerships among educational, behavioral health, and criminal/juvenile justice systems that promote systems integration and policy change and sustainable policies, infrastructure, services, and supports. The evaluation will, therefore, determine the extent to which grantee programs incorporate the components of the framework into their SS/HS planning and program implementation activities; identify the barriers and facilitators of program implementation, as well as successful approaches to addressing barriers within and across programs. The MSE includes three study components (i.e. planning collaboration and partnership, implementation, workforce), and data are gathered through qualitative and quantitative tools to address the research questions.
